An electromagnetic relay is an electrical switch that is activated by an electromagnet to control the flow of current in a circuit. It plays a crucial role in numerous electrical systems and devices, allowing the control of high power circuits with the help of low power control signals. Electromagnetic relays are widely used in various applications ranging from household appliances to industrial control systems, making them an essential component in modern electrical engineering.

How Electromagnetic Relays Work The primary working principle behind an electromagnetic relay involves an electromagnet and a set of contacts. When a current passes through a coil of wire, it generates a magnetic field. This magnetic field attracts a movable armature that is connected to one or more contacts. The movement of the armature opens or closes the contacts, which in turn controls the flow of current in the connected circuit. When a control voltage is applied to the coil, the magnetic field generated causes the armature to move, either opening or closing the contacts. If the contacts are normally open, the flow of electricity is cut off, and when the contacts are closed, the flow of current is allowed to pass through. This ability to control the switching of circuits with low power signals is what makes electromagnetic relays highly useful in automation and remote control applications.
